As a known fan of This American Life, it was bound to happen that I post something from the show, so here we go.
I must say, though, this piece is rather uncharacteristic for the show (and myself) in that it’s rather patriotic - a reminder the freedom that a select few (sometimes) fight for abroad.
So if you can get over Sarah Vowell’s odd voice, there’s a surprisingly moving story here about General Lafayette’s return to the country he help found. For Americans, it was a joyous return, for Lafayette, a bittersweet one after failed attempts at creating the same revolution in France.
